C1 Driver Training Swindon
If you’re training to be a Paramedic, own a small horsebox, run a small business or work in the removals industry, C1 may be the licence for you.

A Category C1 Licence will entitle you to drive a lorry of over 3,500kg up to 7,500kg.

This type vehicle is commonly referred to as a 7.5 ton, Class 3 or C1, and is typically used by Ambulance service providers, horse owners, many removal companies and large delivery companies making home deliveries.

The licensing regulations relating to driving a 7.5t C1 category LGV can be confusing and depending on when you passed your driving test you may need to take an additional test in order to drive one legally.

If you passed your category B (car) driving test before 1st January 1997:

  • You can drive a lorry up to 7.5t that is not being used for hire or reward as these licences automatically include category C1 (101) (not for hire or reward) entitlement.
  • If you intend to receive payment for driving the Lorry you will need to sit the full DVSA C1 test to remove the (101) not for hire or reward clause.

If you passed your category B (car) driving test on or after 1st January 1997:

  • You are not permitted to drive a vehicle over 3.5t in weight and will therefore need to take and pass the full DVSA C1 test before you can drive legally.

DVSA C1 Driving Test SwindonPut simply this means if you passed your practical driving test before 1st January 1997 then it’s likely you will  need some basic training in order to drive a 7.5t C1 Lorry safely and legally, if however you passed your test on or after 1st January 1997 then you will need to sit the full DVSA C1 Test.

You may also need to complete Driver CPC if you intend to drive the 7.5t lorry as part of your work.
